Mezcal Carreño began in 1904 with Don Apolonio Carreño, with mezcal that was made from wild agaves that naturally grew on property. The same land was used to grow sugar cane and sold to the family of the largest rum producers in Mexico. Mezcal Carreño has planted over 30,000 agaves since 2017 and creates additional plots every year.
The company supports multiple non-profits both in Oaxaca and Arizona in the US. With family both in Oaxaca and Arizona, Mezcal Carreño has been able to share its culture and passion on both sides of the border.

The Tepeztate agave is a mid to large-sized plant known for its irregular leaf structure that can grow over 4 feet long. It thrives in rocky areas, including the sides of cliffs, making it a challenging and sought-after agave to cultivate. It takes an impressive 25 years for the Tepeztate to mature fully, contributing to its rarity and exclusivity.
Mezcal - Cerreño - Cuishe

Aromas and flavors of grass and moist earth with light touches of ash. Mature wild agaves are harvested at 10-14 years of age before being cooked in an earthen pit oven. After cooking, the juice is extracted through the use of a traditional Tahona wheel. Fermentation takes place in open-air wooden vats, using only wild, native yeast. The ferment is distilled twice in a wood-fired, copper alembic before bottling at 46% ABV (92 proof).

Mezcal Carreño Tobasiche (or Tobaziche) is produced by mezcalero Leonardo Hernandez. It is one of the more unique and easily identified agave varietals due to their long, trunk-like stocks and vertical piñas that can grow up to 20 feet tall. Agave maturity is reached in 10-15 years which creates rich earth tones. The Tobasiche magueyes are cooked together in an underground pit oven, milled by tahona, open-air fermented in pine vats, and double distilled in copper stills. The essence of papaya and cooked agave blend beautifully with the smokey cedar notes of this mezcal.

Mezcal Carreño Tobalá is produced by mezcalero Leonardo Hernandez. Maguey Tobala typically takes 10-15 years to reach maturity for harvest, and yields a sweeter, more delicate floral flavor. The Tobalá piñas are cooked together in an underground pit oven, milled by tahona, open-air fermented in pine vats, and double distilled in copper stills. This mezcal has hints of almond and chive with a floral nose.

Mezcal Carreño Espadín is produced by mezcalero Leonardo Hernandez in San Dionisio Ocotlán in the Central Valleys of Oaxaca. The Espadín agave piñas are cooked together in an underground pit oven, milled by tahona, open-air fermented in pine vats, and double distilled in copper stills. This Espadin has hints of wild rose, pear and oak.
